Pascagoula, Mississippi

Gulf coast wetlands, maritime industry, and selfish prejudice. The wetlands are expansive here, and are home to flocks of birds. In the Mississippi Delta region, the marshes are eroding because the river no longer floods and deposits sediments, but here they seem healthy. The rig near the river is under construction or repair, and will head to the Gulf of Mexico, where rigs drill for oil and methane. The sign in the foreground urges state voters not to allow construction of a casino on Native American land in Mississippi, as such a casino, which wouldn't pay state or local taxes, would take business away from the big casinos. I don't know whether the voters bowed to the big casinos' selfish and ignorant campaign, or if they chose to let the tribes do as they please on their land. In a place like California, where gambling is not legal in most locales, the controversy over Indian gaming is understandible, but here in casino-crazy Mississippi, it shows only of bigotry and selfishness.
